Asia's Oldest Vineyard's Wines Available
in U.S.
Yellow Moon Imports announces
the arrival of Changyu and Changyu-Castel
wines from China into the United States.
Changyu Winery is the oldest in Asia dating
back to 1892 when the vineyard was established
with vine cuttings imported from France.
The winery has been producing quality wines
since then. In 1915 Changyu wines won four
gold medals (one for each entry) at the
Panama & Pacific International Fair
in San Francisco. Varietals currently available
in the U.S. include a Chardonnay and Cabernet
Sauvignon under the Changyu label and a
Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet
Gernischt from the premium Changyu-Castel
line. The Cabernet Gernischt varietal may
be unfamiliar to even the most travelled
oenophiles. The grape species was exported
to China but later became extinct in Europe
due to blight. This varietal is planted
nowhere else in the world.
Changyu
Winery is located in the Shandong region
of China along the same latitude as California's
Napa Valley. Shandong borders the Yellow
Sea and is noted for a long cool growing
season. Changyu-Castel is a joint venture
between Changyu and the Castel Group, the
largest grower and distributer of wine in
France and the second largest beverage distributer
in the world. This collaboration is producing
world class wines from their seaside vineyard
in Beiyujia.
The
wines themselves are surprisingly elegant
and are modeled on European styles but with
Chinese sensibilities to pair well with
foods. We at Yellow Moon Imports are tremendously
excited by the introduction of such a fine
quality product from a previously unavailable
and unsuspected location.
